The first thing you notice about the UTX-85 is that they have definitely put more design work into it. It sports a familiar overall aesthetic that we all know and love from Microtech, but seems a little more refined. The rounded edges are the most dramatic differnce. Again, I am a fan of the more squared edges on the Ultratech, but then again I also grind my Glock grips into a near perfect rectangle, so what do I know.

The 6061-T6 aluminum body has a great texture to it. Microtech has almost found a way to make something out of metal “soft” feeling. The rounded edges conform to your hand very well and you don’t find yourself grasping it so much as it becoming a natural extension within your hand. It feels more like a precision instrument, a scalpel than a hunk of metal you grab onto for dear life. Let’s call it refined.

The next thing you will likely notice it the new style thumb actuator that was introduced in the UT-10 prototype. It has an X in the top of the stepped pyramid denoting the X in UTX and is actually one of the easiest actuators I have ever found on a Microtech. The UTX-85 is good for all day open-close action and you’re not going to get a sore or stiff thumb from it.

Speaking of the action, it is smooth. Smooth like Barry White talkin’ your Momma out of her dress smooth. Moreover, it is crisp. The deftness of the action seats the blade in place with authority. If you don’t know how an OTF auto works, here is a good video that show the inner workings.

The blade play is minimal for an OTF (Out The Front) auto. If you have been around OTF knives before you know there is no way around it. It is the nature of the design. There isn’t enough material left in the handle to truly eliminate the play, but Microtech’s insane tolerances have almost mitigated the blade play entirely.

The blade itself is 3 3/16″ overall and made from Elmax steel. See our previous post about Elmax here. It is a drop point design with a single groove and our models have the bead blasted finish. The single edge is very sharp out of the box, but if you have a leather strop handy, give it a quick once over. Paper will be trembling in fear on your desk.

You notice that the glass breaker is a little different too. It sports a ball bearing in the end instead of the normal point of death that would catch your finger tips or palm at just the right angle to make you cuss out loud in church.

The tip down pocket clip is stainless steel and has the born-on date, both of ours being August of 2016 and the serial number. There isn’t the cool claw logo on it, but rather the more subdued oval Microtech logo. I don’t know about you guys, but I always say the more claw the better.

Other notable newness is the design of the machine screws holding the body together. Torx would be awesome so we could crack it open and we don’t have the right tool to do so, but it is very similar to this UT6:
